CO2 Destroying Street Lights Coming to a City Near You

French biochemist Pierre Calleja is adding the next building block to the rollout of effective MESH Cities. Calleja has developed a lamp that can be used in a variety of ways including as street lighting.

The lamp is powered without access to grid electricity. Its secret?

The lamps contain a tube filled with micro-algae. They also have a rechargeable  battery. The batteries are charged by the photosynthesis of algae, a process driven by solar energy and CO2.

With approximately 25% of the world’s CO2 generated from car exhaust there is a need of location-based mitigation solutions. Each light unit will sequester an estimated ton of emissions per year. The microalgae is a more efficient CO2 processor than trees with each lamp absorbing 150 to 200 times more CO2 than its leafy friends.
