Steve Mann (yes, that Steve Mann, Cyborg fans) is a MESH Cities supporter. In addition to his work as a professor at the University of Toronto, and on his “Hydraulikos” project, Steve keeps track of the latest trends in responsive, city technologies. Steve writes:
The new streetlights being installed all across Europe have motion-sensing cameras that see how many cars and how many people are present and adjust light output accordingly. Lights communicate with each other to get the optimal light field for the people present (e.g. each light responds to all the cameras not just the camera on its own light). There’s several other companies making these, including one in Canada and some in the US.
The project is the work of Philips Corporation, and is one of a number of testbed initiatives for responsive, efficient cities the company is working on.
